Math 6
Description:
Math 6 builds computational skills and an understanding of math concepts to prepare students for upper-level algebra and geometry courses. Material is presented in written, video, and exploration format with structure provided for note-taking, practice, and reflection. Students are encouraged to use math as a tool that can describe the world and help them solve real-world problems. Students will implement problem-solving strategies to explain their math thinking. Students will learn to use math tools and manipulatives as well as paper and pencil strategies to show their math understanding. Students will practice new strategies and reflect on their understanding.
The mathematical concepts that are covered include the following: operations with decimals, operations with fractions, expressions and equations, inequalities, ratios, proportions and percentages, integers, graphing on the coordinate plane, area and volume, and statistics. Emphasis is also placed on standards of mathematical practice to help students become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and strong problem solvers.
Special Notes:
Students will need access to a printer and a scanner, scanner app, or digital camera in order to submit work for the teacher to review.
FROM THE TEACHER
Math is everywhere, and you use it every day! Math is about more than just using a formula to get the right answer. It’s all about problem-solving! During this sixth-grade math course, we will strive to grow stronger with our computational skills, but also in our critical thinking and communication. It is important for you to be excited about learning, so we are going to learn through a variety of methods – reading, note-taking, watching videos, playing games, practicing, and discussing with one another. It is going to be a wonderful journey through some amazing topics from fractions to geometry, from statistics to equations. After completing this course, you’ll have the skills and understanding to move on to your middle school math courses with confidence.
If there are books and materials for this course, they can be purchased from our Online Bookstore.
