Algebra 2 Part 1

Description:

New for 25-26!

In this course, students will build on previous mathematical knowledge from Algebra I to investigate and use functions to solve problems. Students will analyze and graph functions that include linear functions, quadratic functions, and polynomial functions through investigations, projects, videos, and written material. Additional topics include matrices, conics, and the fundamental theorem of algebra. Students will implement various mathematical processes and learn to justify their solutions. The students will also practice communicating their learning by using proper notation and making connections to previous learning. At the end of the course, the students will have developed their problem-solving abilities as well as the ability to view a real-world problem in context and be prepared to move on to Algebra 2 Part 2.

Special Instructions:

TI-84+ or TI-84+ CE (preferred) Graphing calculators are not optional. Graphing Calculators are a required tool in this course. In each unit, students are given instruction and practice on the capabilities of their graphing calculator as they relate to calculus by both the instructor and the text.

FROM THE TEACHER

*Many students struggled in Algebra 1 because of the PACE of the learning.

*Many students struggle to REMEMBER what they learned in Algebra 1 after a year of studying Geometry.

*Many students struggle in Algebra 2 because of HOLES in their understanding from previous math courses.

MATH301 addresses these issues by presenting all Algebra 2 content spread over four semesters, with robust reviews and space to learn and practice new (and old) content at a sensible pace.

As a missionary kid, forty years ago, I experienced the struggle and academic damage caused by changing schools and curriculum many times and by “uneven” math instruction during middle and high school. My goal in MATH301 is for students to have space to repair the academic damage of gaps in understanding, AND the opportunity to repair the mental and emotional damage of a fear of math or a belief that they cannot succeed in math. After four semesters of MATH301/302 students will be prepared and empowered to succeed in College Algebra. Not every student will learn to love Algebra, but all students can learn to overcome Algebra. I hope to see you soon.
