Chemistry Honors

Description:

In this course, students will deepen their understanding of the composition of matter and the mechanisms that cause it to change. They will also explore physics and earth science concepts according to the course objectives. Students will develop rudimentary lab skills as they investigate natural processes and apply concepts to real-life situations in order to develop problem-solving skills.

*This course has a lab component.

NOTE for Honors: Chemistry Honors (CHEM350) is an enriched version of CHEM300. The supplemental reading and activities in the Honors course allow students the opportunity to reinforce their learning as they gain a deeper understanding of the material. Students are supported by the teacher and by the lessons themselves as they work through the course. Students in the Honors course can expect an average of 1-2 hours of work per week in addition to the regular course content.

Special Notes:

This course is a part of the honors track, and intentional focus will be on the required knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills needed to prepare a student to be successful in future upper level and Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses.

FROM THE TEACHER

Have you ever wondered what is happening between the atoms themselves when you watch vinegar and baking soda fizz together, or when you dissolve sugar into your tea? And why the Periodic Table is such a big deal for chemists? In this Chemistry course, we will learn the answers to these questions and others!

Chemistry studies the characteristics and microscopic interactions between the building blocks of the universe, the elements. It’s a fundamental science because everything in the entire universe is made of various combinations of these building blocks. What you see with your eyes reflects the microscopic interactions between atoms. You will uncover mysteries of God’s Creation and develop your capacity for abstract thought by analyzing and understanding how these invisible materials interact. As we dive into an exploration of the world around us at the atomic level, you will be amazed to discover just how creative and marvelous God’s Creation is! The patterns will surprise you as you discover more of God’s order and care for nature. God cares about all of Creation, even down to the tiniest of atomic particles, so imagine how much God cares about you as well!
