Geometry Honors EVP

Honors Geometry includes an in depth analysis of the concepts of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry. Topics include logic and proof, parallel lines and planes, triangles, polygons, perimeter, area, volume, surface area, similarity, congruence, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. All concepts are also related to real world phenomena. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking skills as they relate to logical reasoning and argument. Students will be required to use technology and manipulatives to discover concepts covered in the course.
Access to a scanner or digital camera is necessary for this course as students will be required to submit work on assignments frequently throughout the semester/year. Usage of a graphing calculator is also a requirement in this course. Only the TI-84 family is supported by our instructors.
This course is a part of the honors track, and intentional focus will be on the required knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills needed to prepare a student to be successful in future upper-level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Recommended sequence for students wishing to pursue advanced math classes: MATH150, MATH250, MATH350, MATH400, followed by their choice of MATH500, MATH510, or MATH520.
*As part of the EVP program, this course will have a live class requirement once a week at a set time; please see the website for time choices. This live class will include teaching, discussion with classmates from around the world, demonstrations, questions and answers, and other aspects of a live classroom. Students will have weekly due dates and stay on a traditional coursework schedule.

What is Geometry? And why should we study it? Well, Geometry is the study of the size, shape, and position of figures. Basically, it’s all about shapes! And It is all around us. In fact, you probably use it daily without even realizing it! Think about it…how much milk can you pour into that glass? Yep, you guessed it, that’s geometry! Going on a road trip with your family and trying to load the trunk up? That’s right, you’ll be using Geometry! Maybe you are helping your dad put a new fence around your yard…..you’ll definitely be using Geometry to determine how much material is needed, how to space the posts, and how much paint is necessary. I could go on and on just about this one project! These are some basics uses of Geometry, but did you know that computing imaging (that’s what is used in making animated movies, video games, and stuff like that) uses geometry?? WOW! There are so many professions that use Geometry such as architects, artists, land surveyors, designers, video game producers, engineers, software developers, carpenters, astronomers, and the list goes on!
So come explore Geometry with us where we will learn about two and three dimensional shapes, while we focus on reasoning about geometric relationships, think logically, apply deductive reasoning, and problem solve using real-life examples!
