AP® US Government and Politics

Description:

AP® US Government and Politics includes a brief comparative study of government, and then an in-depth study of American government on the federal, state, and local levels. This includes its complex interworking, checks and balances, political responsibilities, structures, functions, and authority. This course will give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in both the United States and around the world. Students will learn of God’s sovereignty in all forms of government, their responsibilities, how to practically evaluate political issues, and how to influence one’s own government. This course is also designed to prepare students to successfully complete the AP® US Government & Politics exam offered each May.

Special Notes:

If you are planning to take the AP® exam associated with this course, then be aware that beginning in Fall 2019 the College Board requires that all students register in October of each school year to take the exam which is held in early May. You must make your decision early. There are penalties associated with late registration and with registering and then deciding not to take the exam at a later date. Please plan accordingly. As an online school, NorthStar Academy is not a testing center. We are a certified AP® course provider. Students must locate a face to face school in their local area that will allow them to sit the exam with their students.

This version of the course is not Dual Credit eligible. To receive Dual Credit, you must register for the DC version of this course, if available.

FROM THE TEACHER

The United States of America is one of the oldest democratic countries in the world, but how exactly did it get there and how does it remain a democracy? As a long-standing developed democratic country, it took a significant amount of time to reach what the United States is today. In this AP® level course, we will analyze and critique the development of the governmental structure of the United States of America by looking at historical documents, famous Supreme Court cases and policies. We will also compare and contrast the United States government and political structure to other countries around the world.
