Chemistry Honors
Description:
In this course, students will study of the foundations of chemistry, building on the concepts and scientific thinking developed in middle school science. Students use scientific inquiry and higher-order problem-solving as they explore the composition, properties, and changes of matter and their applications through interactive simulations, engineering solutions, and virtual and hands-on experiences. The scientific process is fully used and documented in lab investigations, giving students the skills they need to analyze data and make inferences about natural phenomena. In addition, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts are integrated throughout the course. Through phenomenon-based learning, students will be able to demonstrate a vast understanding of the importance of chemistry in the world, enabling them to apply these principles to their everyday lives and our global society.
This course has a lab component.
NOTE for Honors: Chemistry Honors (CHEM350) is an enriched version of CHEM300. The supplemental reading and activities in the Honors course allow students the opportunity to reinforce their learning as they gain a deeper understanding of the material. Students are supported by the teacher and by the lessons themselves as they work through the course. Students in the Honors course can expect an average of 1-2 hours of work per week in addition to the regular course content.
Special Notes:
This course is a part of the honors track, and intentional focus will be on the required knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills needed to prepare a student to be successful in future upper level and Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses.
FROM THE TEACHER
Have you ever wondered why bread dough rises to make the perfect loaf of bread or what makes a hot air balloon float through the sky? These are just a few of the questions we will be answering in our Chemistry Honors course as we take a deeper look through the Chemistry content and find real life applications of these concepts! Throughout the course, we will be striving to make strong connections between what we are learning and the world around us!
We will be uncovering the mysteries of God’s Creation by analyzing and understanding the materials of the universe and the changes they undergo! As we dive a little deeper into an exploration of the world around us at the atomic level, you will be challenged and amazed to discover just how creative and marvelous God’s Creation is! He cares about His Creation, even down to the tiniest of atomic particles; so imagine how much He cares about each one of you, as well!
We’ll be challenged to think more critically as we explore all these things and more through our Honors Chemistry Course!
If there are books and materials for this course, they can be purchased from our Online Bookstore.
