Introduction to Psychology

Description:

This course introduces students to the scientific study of human behavior. It offers students a unique opportunity to compare Biblical and other worldview perspectives on major topics related to human development and consciousness. Using a variety of text and video sources, students will investigate God’s creation of the tremendously complex human mind. Students will study details of the field in order to better understand their own, and others’, motivations and reactions as well as to learn about tools that can help them improve their learning and develop healthier mental habits. The material learned will transfer to meaningful, real-world contexts at the end of each unit.

FROM THE TEACHER

Why are some people naturally shy while others are more outspoken? Why do you react the way that you do in certain situations? What does the Bible have to say about human nature and behavior? These questions, and many more, can be answered by taking Introduction to Psychology at NSA. By looking scientifically at the study of human behavior and comparing humanist and Biblical worldview perspectives of the subject, you can gain tools to better understand yourself and others, as well as to govern yourself more wisely. Major course topics include the history of the field and research in the field, lifespan development (from the stages of a young child through the elderly years), the anatomy of the human brain and nervous system, sensation and perception, and states of consciousness (including the sleep cycle). All of this knowledge can help you improve your learning, increase positive engagement in social settings, and develop healthier personal relationships. I hope that you are ready to join us in this important, practical, and relevant learning!

Student Feedback

Though the course is very brief, I would still say it gives a good introductory overview into what psychology is about. It is not a hectic course at all, a manageable elective.

I loved some of the discussion questions.

The last few weeks especially were highly enjoyable to go through. I was thinking about the lessons for days after.
