English 1 Honors
Description:
English I Honors offers highly motivated students material that closely mirrors ENGL100, with an emphasis on higher-level thinking skills and academic writing, while reading short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and novels and viewing a Shakespearean play. Students will connect with classmates as they explore universal themes that relate to real-life experiences. Additionally, students encounter weekly vocabulary lessons and grammar lessons that will strengthen necessary skills for success at the next level of language arts.
NOTE for Honors: English 1 Honors (ENGL150) is an enriched version of ENGL100. The supplemental literature and assignments in the Honors course allow students the opportunity to reinforce their learning as they gain a deeper understanding of the material. Students are supported by the teacher and by the lessons themselves as they work through the course. Students in the Honors course can expect an average of 1-2 hours of work each week in addition to the regular course content.
Special Notes:
This course is a part of the honors track, and intentional focus will be on the required knowledge and critical thinking and analytical skills to prepare a student to be successful in future upperlevel and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
FROM THE TEACHER
Do you enjoy reading and discussing literature? Would you like to take your writing to a higher level? Then ENGL150 could be a great fit for you! This class focuses on not just simply reading literature but responding to it as well; you will interact with your classmates in discussion posts to give your thoughts on what you have read, as well as journaling your observations to the exciting texts in this class. In ENGL150, you will expand your vocabulary and compose a variety of writing at an elevated honors level. This class will help you develop important assets for wherever you find yourself in the future–inferring from others’ communication correctly and clearly expressing your own thoughts are two skills you will use for the rest of your life.
