Description:
This course is designed to facilitate continued student growth in the areas of reading fluency, reading strategies development, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. Through the utilization of an integrated approach, this course will expose students to a variety of literary genres including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Skills such as language development, word identification, the writing process, vocabulary strategy development, and comprehension will be taught through these various types of texts. Students will apply writing, spelling, and grammar skills through focused skill development in the writing process and support each student’s growth in writing skills from their current level. Students will be introduced to beginning research and MLA format with step-by-step instruction and support and will write two formal five-paragraph academic essays (persuasive and informational).
Special Notes:
When only one semester is needed, it is strongly recommended that students take semester A of the language arts course.
Students will need access to a printer and a scanner, scanner app or digital camera in order to submit work for the teacher to review.

Do you have a particular interest in a time period or event in history? This course will give you an opportunity to jump back in time and look at an event or person through the lens of history. You will learn to look at primary sources in order to dig deeply into a topic, and journey through a step by step process to write and edit your work, finally presenting your research in a unique and engaging way to your classmates. You will engage in discussion around novels that bring a global perspective and explore nonfiction text structures to build your toolbox of reading comprehension strategies. You will grow as a learner and share your creative side through your own stories. Let’s jump into history to become great readers and writers!
